Challenger's End
(January 28, 1985. For Judy)

Ride across the sky,
like jewels
like rain

And kiss the stars, so close
melting with your touch

Dared we to go to the cold wastes
the frozen spaces between worlds

Briefly flown high in morning sunlight
free from Earth
never touching Mother

Laughing then soundlessly screaming
joining the air
united with flame

Sent like blazing suns across the sky
a blooming flower

Chariots of flame held sorrow
transfigured into spirit
in one instant, brilliant moment

Helplessly filled with pain were we who watched
left here to mourn

While they race with the infinite winds.
